When thoughts become overwhelming

There are times I feel like a lake. No, that's way too vast for me. More like a puddle of clear water during a light, early March's morning rain. Although I feel so cool and fresh in the inside, I am actually being bombarded by waves after waves of drops coming from virtually nowhere, as a puddle realizes the clouds high in the sky.
Now, if you think of the puddle as my conscious mind and the drops as random thoughts, you'll have a very good idea of what I'm talking about.
From the moment I realized this phenomenon up until today I haven't been able to find a way to calm it down.
So, inevitably, my mind drifts back to the puddle. Once that small yet heavy enough sphere of water drops on and breaks its surface, is there anything that can calm the waves?
Now, if you think of the puddle as my conscious mind and the drops as random thoughts, you'll have a very good idea of what I'm talking about.
